The 2025 report by the Women’s Reform Commission of Bangladesh presents a wide range of recommendations aimed at establishing gender justice and advancing women’s rights. While the report includes several progressive proposals, such as securing women’s safety and property right,s it has also sparked controversy by clashing with the country’s religious, cultural, and familial values. Particularly contentious are the tensions between secular feminist ideals and religious traditions, as well as between patriarchal social structures and gendered responsibilities. Citizen Initiative presents this policy paper to critically examine these contradictions and contribute toward a balanced, inclusive gender policy.
The seminar emphasized the urgent need for justice and reconciliation following the collapse of Bangladesh’s fascist regime, stressing accountability for crimes against humanity, enforced disappearances, and political persecution. This post-fascist justice relies on four key pillars: systematic documentation of state crimes, international-standard judicial mechanisms, institutional reforms for human rights, and a national consensus to prevent authoritarianism.
