“The Citizen Initiative (CI) expresses grave concern and strongly protests the recent statement by the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, which indicated no plan to ban the Awami League. This decision is perceived as a blatant disregard for the spirit of the July uprising and the sacrifices made by thousands across the political spectrum.
Furthermore, CI is deeply alarmed by reports of behind-the-scenes maneuvering and unofficial talks between the Bangladesh military and certain July Uprising leaders, including Hasnat Abdullah. This engagement raises serious concerns about the country’s democratic future. It suggests that elements within the Bangladesh Army may be attempting to rehabilitate the Awami League, potentially preempting trials for alleged mass killings during July-August 2024.
CI vehemently rejects any backdoor negotiations that seek to shield the Awami League from accountability and betray the people’s demand for justice.
CI demands immediate action from the Bangladesh government to hold the Awami League accountable, designate it as a criminal organization, and permanently ban it from political participation. CI asserts that the party poses a significant threat to national security, democracy, and human rights. CI insists that justice must be served—without compromise or delay.”
